Working in the realm of pathology is a little like being part of a car engine... Tucked away under the bonnet, it is integral to the functioning of the machine, but few people really understand how it works or how to get the best out of it. Public engagement is the opportunity to start a dialogue with the public about what we do and how it is relevant to them. In return, the public have the chance to ask questions and confirm or refute their previous conceptions. The time spent promoting pathology is an investment; our returns are happier, better informed patients, better use of the service by clinicians, and a new generation of pathologists.
