Earlier this year a nanocomposite polymer developed by Alex Seifalian, professor of nanotechnology and regenerative medicine at UCL Medical School, called polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane-poly (carbonate-urea) urethane (POSS-PCU), was used in an incredible bit of surgery. A patient in Sweden had a section of his windpipe replaced with a piece built from his own stem cells and the polymer.
